children of God have so many different perspectives on Who God is and what He is like. There seem to be as many opinions on this as there are people. I have heard so many confident presentations on the way God is. i have made a number of those presentations myself. it’s funny how they seem to contradict one another. One presents a picture of an angry God, another of a joyful God. One says God is Holy and to be feared, another says He’s a Papa to be hugged. Some say He’s all about prayer; others say He’s all about the poor; still others say He’s all about the lost. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Who knows?
is it wrong to try to figure out what God is like? NO WAY! it’s our glory! let’s spend our lives searching Him out, spending time with Him, getting to know Him. But how? Apparently, that’s what all these different presenters are doing, and yet they’re coming up with different answers. How do we come up with the right answer concerning Who God is? Well, He clearly expresses Himself in His Word; so, let’s give ourselves to studying His “diary” as i like to call it!
But, people do that and STILL come up with opposing opinions on what God is like! Clearly, it’s not as simple as just reading words on a page. God Himself, the Holy Spirit must open our minds to the Word, and open the Word to us, and grant supernatural revelation as we read the Bible, talk to God and live life. God must reveal Himself to us. The Word tells us that Jesus has authority and choice to reveal the Father to us. Please do, Jesus!
And He is. And He will. I am comforted today in reading Revelation and being reminded that there is a day coming when the question of Who God is will be answered like never before. Jesus is really coming back, and He really is the exact representation of the image and glory of God. In Christ, the fullness of the Godhead really does dwell. When we see Him, we will see the Father. We will see precisely Who God is and what He is like. As if that weren’t enough!!!
The Father Himself is coming. He will dwell among us. We will be His people and He will be our God. God Himself will answer the question of Who He is.
And He is answering it. And it is good for us to ponder it now. It is good to form hypotheses from scripture and life and prayer and to test them against the Word with other believers. i think we should never stop wondering and discovering Who God is. I also think we should be aware of our incomplete picture, our partial vision and our limited capacity to comprehend. Not that God isn’t good at revealing Himself through many ways, (not the least of which are the Holy Scriptures and Jesus Christ Himself) but that we are not all that good at perceiving Who God is. I mean, God Himself, Jesus Christ stood in front of the disciples, preached Himself from the entire Old Testament, performed signs and wonders and there were still questions about Who the Guy was!
i’m not trying to make this a nice, neat little inspirational post. i’m sharing the tension we live in: so badly wanting to know God; so many being so sure that He is this way or that way, having our own thoughts on what He’s like from the Word, from our walk and from our talks with Him, wondering if these are accurate and how they fit into the puzzle of perspectives being pieced together all around us.
Take a breath. It’ll be okay. God will reveal Himself. And He is. He is really good at showing us what He’s like. And there is a day soon coming in which we will all see Him and the way that He is.
