The God of our Lord

I was shocked to discover that in over 500 posts i have never really touched on one of my favorite bible prayers! Yes, it’s true: we’ve been hangin’ on the hill for over 500 posts now; ever approaching our 2nd blog-birthday. I have decided that blog-birthdays are measured by number-of-posts rather than calender days: keeps us honest. so, when we reach 730 posts, the hill will be 2 blog-years old! well, before our second birthday, i simply must get around to saying something about Ephesians 1:17-19.

I have been praying this prayer daily for almost five years now, not for myself (which would be a good idea!) but for my first-born child. I have a prayer for each of my children and this is the one i pray for my big girl.

It begins, “that the God of our Lord…” we gotta stop there.

sometimes the most profound truths just whiz by us in our hurry to cover more territory. Check this out: our Lord has a God! Whoa!

Jesus is Lord. This doesn’t just mean He’s a great guy. It means He is God. He’s not a lord, He’s THE Lord. And… He has a God.

There’s plenty of folks out there who believe that Christians are polytheists: that we have, not one, but, multiple gods. it’s the whole Trinity dealio. Truth is: there is only one God. He exists in eternal relationship with Himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each being God, yet not a god apart from the others. They are God. They are one. He is God.

I know, it sends the mind smokingĀ  and spinning off into a thousand questions. But, this is part of our glory: to think on such things! Jesus Christ is Lord and He has a God.

Jesus’ God is the Father. They are one and they relate to one another as Father and Son. At a glorious moment in history, Jesus became entirely human while remaining entirely God. Jesus relates to His Father as a human to the One God. Jesus, yet being God, considers His Father to be His God.

The Father considers Jesus to be His human Son with Whom He is one. The Father delights in handing all authority, honor and glory over to His Son Who is God.

Ah! What a relationship! They do not Lord over one another. rather they willingly, joyfully, lovingly submit to one another as God. Jesus is happy to count His Father as His God. The Father is happy to count His Son as the Lord.

Jesus is the Lord and He is our Lord. He is ours. He was given for us. He is our advocate with the Father. Jesus is the Lord of the human race. He stands before the Father on our behalf and brings us back into right relationship with Him. He restores to us the sonship we were born to enjoy with our God.

it is such a good thing that our Lord has a God. And His God is our God; His Father is our Father. They are one. They are God, and we are being made one with Him.

i’m sure i haven’t said all of this quite right, but it thrills my heart to try. I love that our Lord has a God!
