“in the knowledge of Him…” ephesians 1:17
the purpose of all wisdom and all revelation is: knowing Jesus.
if someone offers wisdom that does not in some way result in a better knowing of Jesus, then it’s wisdom we simply don’t need-to-know. If one has a revelation that does not lead us to know Christ more, then we just don’t need-to-know it! This can be our filter for all things labeled wise or revealing. We can ask, “Will this help me know Jesus better?”
Now, Jesus makes Himself known in some really ridiculous situations. He uses foolish things to reveal the wisdom of God. He uses weak things to make known His strength. If we are going to ask Him the question, “Will this help me know Jesus better?” we need to be willing to listen to the answer. We need to be willing to get to know Him in the foolish place, willing to see Him revealed in the weak place, for this is the central thing: to know Him.
I’ll go so far as to say that knowing Jesus is the main point of all prayer. I’ll even say it is the point to life! I am safe in saying so, because Jesus did it first:
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3
Did you catch that? God just told you what the meaning of life is! Were you listening? You can go back and read it again if you need to. The meaning of life is to know Him: Father God and His Son, Jesus Christ, for they are One. This is the purpose, the goal, the end of all things: to know Him!
Are there pursuits in your life that are not leading you to know Jesus better? this may be hard for us to judge, cuz He really does show Himself in some strange circumstances! But, if Holy Spirit points anything out to you, anything that is not helping you know Jesus, why don’t you just trash it? i will seek to do the same.
Father, refocus us on the purpose of all things: to know Jesus. May our prayers, our passions and pursuits all be to that end: that we may know Him, really know Him. Don’t let us only consume information, peddled about as “wisdom”; let us know Your Son personally. Don’t let us be enamored with what men call “revelations”; only reveal Jesus to us. That we may know Him.
