imagine if certain laws of nature applied to absolutely everyone… except for, say, people who wear green. Let’s take gravity for example. imagine everyone is subject to gravity, except for people wearing green. If you wear green, you can float around and stuff. Cool, huh? Cool, but unrealistic. Except, stuff is kinda like that for the children of God.
Not everything goes well in this life. We have some pretty horrible experiences in this fallen world. Some things turn out for good in the end, some things don’t. That’s just the way it is. That’s just the ways things work… except for people who love God.
People who love God have horrible experiences, stuff goes bad for them, they are subject to the consequences of this fallen world, but… in the end, all things work together for their good (Romans 8:28.) The laws of the natural world are bent, as it were, for people who love God. And so, our experience of life in this universe is radically different.
We have another example of this in the Ephesians 1 prayer that we’ve been working through. We’ve been looking at 3 things that will thrill the eyes of our hearts and fill our lives with light: (1) the hope, the confident expectation of things yet to come in Christ’s calling. (2) the value and esteem that Jesus ascribes to His inheritance in us, and (3) an exceedingly great power that moves towards us as we believe
“and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe” Ephesians 1:19.
There is a surpassingly great power that is right now moving from heaven towards earth. It’s a power that could instantly reanimate every lifeless particle on the planet. It’s a power that could unmake and remake the world. Not only can this power split atoms and stick them back together, but it can sever body from spirit, spirit from soul and reunite them all in no time. But, the power that our prayer is talking about only works for those who believe.
God sends rain on the just and the unjust. His grace is truly demonstrated in all the world, to the righteous and the wicked. He upholds ALL things by the word of His power. And yet, there is a certain power that is only available for those who believe.
Now lest we think it unfair, or lest we become proud of our faith, let us remember that faith is the gift of God. it’s a gift that is available to everyone. it seems that God has given we humans some choice in the matter of our usage of this gift. we live in a day of “whosoever” -whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved; and a great power will begin to move on their behalf.
i want to talk more about this power, but we’ll leave off today, pondering the privilege of a power that moves towards us who believe.
